If I look back, I am lost

— Daenerys Targaryen.

I’m E L Croucher, writer of The Butterfly on Fire and the upcoming Horned Winged Blessed.

After experiencing a childhood in London as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have always felt that what I went through was pretty average. I was a lucky child, surrounded by love and support from my family and friends. It wasn’t until I grew up and stretched my wings out into the adult world that I realised that I had a drastic decision to make, and my story was therein worthy of telling.

My friends and peers would listen to me talk about my past, and I could tell from their reactions that it was not your average dinner-party anecdote! Before long, I had friends constantly asking me how to deal with certain issues they were going through – as they felt I could always sympathise and draw from my own experiences to help them.

It didn’t stop there.
After going through what I did, I then began to want to “save” anyone else who may be hurting in the same way. Feeling that something is constantly wrong with you isn’t a pleasant experience, and I don’t wish it on anyone.

Unfortunately, we do not yet live in a society that understands and loves each and every person within it – and that can be tough for the minorities. For me, The Butterfly on Fire is a way of reaching out to anyone going through that – and telling them that “if I can do it, so can you!”.

It’s an honour to be able to tell my story. I hope, as a reader, you not only enjoy it, but also take something from it on a personal level.
